INTRODUCTION

For most of our customers—high-end architects, millworkers, and builders in North America—3-D adjustable concealed hinges are no longer a mystery. When we first introduced them here over a dozen years ago, they considered these hinges as simply a replacement for Soss in a project looking to hidden door. Now they specify and install them for every type of door in every kind of project.

In Europe, German-made heavy-duty 3-D adjustable concealed hinges were introduced in 2001 by /B/a/S/y/s/, and they continue to manufacture and innovate their PIVOTA state-of-the-art hinges for virtually any door and application.

System Features :

• full range of load capacities, from 88lbs to 770lbs with only two hinges installed.

• many of the models are UL listed.

• full range of architectural finishes. We will be stocking a limited range of the most popular finishes.

• PIVOTA CLOSE : concealed hinge with integrated closing function for doors up to 176lbs.

• Same mortise for hinges of varying load capacities.

• DESIGN models feature magnetic coverplates. No visible fasteners.

BaSys explains their basic engineering concept :

“Exclusively developed and patented by Basys, the design principle forms the heart of the Pivota® DX hinge range. A symmetric four-knuckle joint evenly transfers the forces from the door leaf into the frame. It is connected to the hinge elements by pistons which support the hinge transversally. These pistons channel the opening and closing forces in circular fashion in all directions. This principle gives doors a smooth mechanical action. It reliably takes up door-leaf weights and, together with the solid material used, provides a high level of stability – even in conjunction with extreme weights and frequent use.”

And indeed, we found these hinges to be surprisingly easier to open and close, with less resistance, than other concealed hinges.

EQUAL MORTISE FOR DIFFERENT CAPACITY HINGES

The PIVOTA line is distinguished by having hinges of different capacities which share equivalent mortises. This has evolved from the tight relationship BaSys has with many OEMs in Germany. This is done through adjusting the material makeup of the hinges without changing the appearance. Also, different sized doors throughout the project can appear to have the same hinge.

DESIGN vs. STANDARD BASYS MODELS

BaSys makes hinges both for those who like a clean, minimal look, and others for those gearheads who want to see the guts. We’ve met both. The DESIGN models, when mortised in, will be flush with the surrounding jamb when the magnetic plates are installed.
